Le passé parfait continu (Past Perfect Continuous) est une forme verbale utilisée pour indiquer une action qui a commencé dans le passé, s'est poursuivie pendant un certain temps, et a été complétée avant un autre moment ou une autre action également située dans le passé. Structure du Passé Parfait Continu
La structure du passé parfait continu est la suivante :
Sujet + had been + verbe-ing
- Exemples :
- She had been studying for hours before the exam started.
- They had been living in Paris for five years before moving to London.
Dans ces exemples, « had been » est la forme passée de « to be » au passé parfait, et « studying » et « living » sont les participes présents des verbes « study » (étudier) et « live » (vivre) respectivement.
Utilisation du Passé Parfait Continu
Pour décrire une action en cours dans le passé : Le passé parfait continu est utilisé pour indiquer une action qui avait commencé avant un autre événement passé et qui s’est poursuivie jusqu’à ce moment-là.
- Exemple : She had been working at the company for five years before she got promoted.
Pour mettre l’accent sur la durée d’une action : Il insiste sur la continuité de l’action plutôt que sur son achèvement.
- Exemple : They had been waiting for the bus for over an hour when it finally arrived.
Avec des expressions de temps spécifiques : Des expressions telles que « for », « since », « all day », « all morning », etc., sont souvent utilisées avec le passé parfait continu pour indiquer la durée de l’action.
- Exemple : By the time we arrived, they had been playing football for two hours.
Méthodes d’Utilisation
Pour former le passé parfait continu :
- Utilisez « had been » : C’est la forme passée de « to be » pour toutes les personnes.
- Ajoutez le participe présent (verbe-ing) : Utilisez le participe présent du verbe principal.

- Actif : They had been playing tennis for two hours when it started to rain.
- Passif : She had been waiting for the bus for thirty minutes before it arrived.

Utilisez le passé parfait continu pour compléter les phrases suivantes en utilisant les informations entre parenthèses :
